V A Shiva @ MIT: Class Of October 7, 2011
Systems Visualization Class
By Ashley Smith
V A Shiva @ MIT This Week
The fifth class held on October 7th, 2011 discussed Visual Metaphors and Representation Using Graphs and Trees. Based on the recognition that Visual Metaphors were critical as the “front end” for driving the messaging of Systems Visualization, the class reviewed some of the basics of Visual Design to provide principles in the design of the metaphors. To support this, the 11 Elements of Visual Design was reviewed.

The lecture also revisited node and link system drawings by providing more formalism through a discussion of Graphs and Trees. The purpose of this formalism was to convey to the class that there is a large and rich body of knowledge on how to optimally “draw” the graphs and trees that many students used (though not always necessary) to represent their System Drawings.

The class went into detail on the various problems that drawing of graphs and trees represent on a 2-D sheet of paper e.g. crowding of elements, overlapping, etc. and that the resolution of such problem was to represent the graphs and trees in other formats such as using Pivot Graphs and the Circle Visualization to show connections in both qualitative and quantitative format, using real estate more parsimoniously.

The class were assigned Assignment 5 to use Pivot Graphs and the Circle Visualization to re-present their original complex system drawing in the newly-learned format. The exercise would allow students to visually represent their complex drawings in a different and perhaps more manageable format.

Systems Visualization Class Of September 30, 2011
The fourth class of Systems Visualization held on October 7th, 2011, the students recognized the importance of Visual Metaphors to quickly evoke an emotion beyond the “nodes” and “links”. The class began with a review of a digram presented by one of the students (See Figure 1 below.) The diagram caught everyone's → Read More
Systems Visualization Class Of September 23, 2011
On September 23rd, M.I.T. Department of Biological Engineering’s third Systems Visualization class was held. While the first classes discussed Systems, this class focused on Visualization. Dr. Shiva started the class with an explanation of what visualization is. He also gave a historical review of visualization. The class went through → Read More
Systems Visualization Class Of September 16, 2011
Friday 09/16/11 was the second class of Department of Biological Engineering’s Systems Visualization class. at M.I.T. The class was moved to a larger room to accommodate the large student turnout. Dr. Shiva started the class reviewing different types of systems. First, the class reviewed what is an ‘Open System‘. Open systems receive Input/s, perform → Read More
Systems Visualization Class Of September 9, 2011
The first class of Systems Visualization for the Fall 2011 semester at M.I.T's Department of Biological Engineering was held on 09/09/11. Dr. V. A. Shiva had reserved the classroom expecting to see fifteen students who had already registered for the class. However, within twenty minutes of starting the class, Dr. Shiva was scrambling to find more chairs → Read More
